About Precious Metal Clay
The Precious Metal Clay Concept
Precious Metal Clay (PMC) is an exciting new product developed by the Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan. PMC consists of fine microscopic particles of silver or gold, which are suspended in a non-toxic organic binder and water, which gives it the consistency of modeling clay. PMC looks like clay and is worked by clay.
PMC can be formed into a vast array of shapes and textures using a wide variety of simple tools as well as using your bare hands. When fired and held at the right temperature, the water and binder sinter will burn-off as the metal fuses together leaving your creation in 99.9% pure silver or gold with the original shape, textures and details intact (slight shrinkage occurs). The result is a solid piece of either Fine Silver or Gold.
What is PMC?
Scientists in Japan developed a combination of binders and metal particles to create a material with the working properties of model ing clay, known as precious metal clay, or PMC. This water-soluble product is available from several manufacturers in the form of lump, sheets, slip, and ready-to-use syringes. An organic binder provides elasticity while holding very tiny grains of metal in suspension. After the water is driven off, the object is heated to the fusing temperature of the constituent metal. During heating, the binding material burns away, which causes the object to shrink to a degree equal to the volume originally occupied by the binder.
The process is easiest with pure silver and pure gold because these noble metals resist the formation of oxides and fuse at easily attainable temperatures. Platinum (the other noble metal) can be made into clay but requires temperatures beyond the reach of most kilns.
After firing, it can be finished with a variety of techniques including tumbling, soldering to other pieces, scratch brushing, burnishing, etc. It can also take on various patinas using a variety of solutions like liver of sulfur or raku. PMC is certified to be completely non-toxic in both its pre-firing clay and post-firing solid metal forms.
